Perennial shrub of the Malvaceae family, Abutilon vitifolium is native to Chile, where it grows in temperate and humid areas, often at the edge of forests and on well-exposed slopes of lowland and mid-altitude. In gardens, it forms a large upright shrub that can reach 3 to 5 meters in height, with an airy silhouette.
Its foliage is very characteristic: large gray-green, lobed leaves reminiscent of those of the vine, covered with a dense down with a velvety touch, giving a slightly silvery appearance. The flowers, grouped in loose clusters, are a soft mauve to lilac, with five silky slightly translucent petals.
In its natural environment, flowering occurs from September to November (austral spring). In European climates, it generally occurs from May to July. This species appreciates warm and sheltered exposures and remains sensitive to severe frosts.
