Acantholimon ulicinum

Acantholimon ulicinum cushion plant with spiny rock garden foliage and pink flowers
Acantholimon ulicinum

Perennial cushion plant of the Plumbaginaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of the eastern Mediterranean basin, the Middle East, and the Caucasus, where it settles on arid slopes, calcareous screes, and exposed rock gardens, between 1000 and 2500 meters altitude.

It forms spiny, dense, and persistent cushions, reaching 10 to 20 cm in height, composed of linear, rigid, and prickly leaves, with a characteristic grey-green color. This compact cushion habit is an effective response to summer drought conditions and the strong winds of high-altitude rocky environments.

The flowers, bright pink to pale pink, are borne in slender, upright spikes that rise above the cushion. The membranous and persistent calyx, pinkish to whitish in hue, remains ornamental well after flowering, extending the plant's visual interest for several weeks.

In its natural habitat, its flowering extends from June to August depending on altitude and exposure. In cultivation, it blooms in June-July, in very well-drained soil, preferably calcareous, in full sun exposure.

Close to Acantholimon hohenhackeri , it is distinguished notably by its more slender floral spikes and its more westerly distribution range.
