Perennial of the Brassicaceae family, native to the mountains of the Balkans and the Anatolian peninsula, where it grows on calcareous rocks, screes, and alpine lawns in dense cushions.
It is one of the most compact species of the genus: it forms very tight, almost rigid cushions, 5-10 cm in height, with small narrow leaves densely silver-silky. The yellow flowers appear in May-June, literally covering the cushion with a colorful mantle. This cushion architecture, characteristic of high-altitude plants adapted to strong winds and harsh winters, makes it a plant of great interest for cultivation in alpine rock gardens or troughs.
It requires perfect drainage, a calcareous or neutral substrate, and full sun exposure. It dreads stagnant winter moisture more than the cold itself. A collector's plant for alpine plant enthusiasts, it is ideally cultivated in a calcareous trough or very well-drained rock garden.
