Androsace globifera

Androsace globifera, very compact alpine cushion silver gray with pink lilac flowers with yellow heart
Androsace globifera

Dwarf perennial of the Primulaceae family, native to the western Himalayas, from Pakistan to Nepal, growing in alpine meadows, moraines, and rock gardens between 3,000 and 5,000 meters altitude.

It forms a hard and very compact cushion, made up of extremely tight and contiguous globular rosettes, entirely covered with a dense felt of star-shaped hairs giving the whole a characteristic silver-gray hue.

The flowers, solitary on very short stems barely emerging from the cushion, are saucer-shaped with five pink-lilac petals, adorned with a central yellow eye.

Like most Himalayan androsaces, it requires in cultivation a very well-drained substrate, slightly acidic to neutral, protection against persistent winter rains, and good brightness.

It is slightly less difficult than some extreme Himalayan species and can be successfully cultivated in a well-drained trough or in a pot under light shelter.
