Anthyllis vulneraria 'Coccinea'

Perennial of the Fabaceae family, this selected cultivar of Anthyllis vulneraria stands out from the type species by the remarkable color of its flowers, from crimson red to intense scarlet, borne on downy calyxes often tinged with dark purple. This striking color, rare in the genus, makes it a highly sought-after subject for ornamental rock gardens and dry gardens.

Its habit is compact and spreading, forming cushions 15 to 25 cm in height. The foliage, composed of silky elliptical leaflets of a grayish-green, pleasantly contrasts with the intensity of the flowers. Blooming occurs from May to July.

Like the type species, this cultivar requires well-drained soil, poor to moderately fertile, in full sun. It withstands summer drought and is perfectly suited to rock gardens, walls, and sunny slopes. It is undemanding once established and is resistant to cold.

This cultivar has been appreciated in ornamental horticulture for several decades for its exceptional color, which distinctly deviates from the usual yellow of the genus and allows for vivid chromatic associations with other rock garden plants.
