Campanula aucheri

Campanula aucheri in bloom in high-altitude screes in Turkey
Campanula aucheri

Perennial of the Campanulaceae family, native to Turkey, mainly from the Pontic regions and northeastern Anatolia, where it grows in rocky grasslands and high-altitude screes, between approximately 2,000 and 3,500 meters.

It forms small, low, compact rosettes, almost tufted, barely exceeding 5 to 10 cm in height when in bloom. The leaves are small, spatulate to oval, slightly toothed on the edges, a tender green and slightly pubescent, giving them a soft, matte appearance. This stocky, almost flat habit is characteristic of the plant.

The flowers, borne individually on short reddish peduncles, are an intense and deep purple-violet, spread out in a star shape with five well-opened lobes, which clearly distinguishes them from the classic bell-shaped tubular form of the genus. The creamy white center and yellow stamens contrast with the bright hue of the petals.

In its natural habitat, its flowering extends from June to August depending on altitude. In cultivation, it generally blooms from May to July.

It requires full sun exposure, perfect drainage, and tolerates summer drought well once established. It is ideally suited for cultivation in pots, alpine troughs, or well-drained rock gardens.
