Corydalis flexuosa 'China Blue'

Horticultural selection of Corydalis flexuosa, this perennial from the Fumariaceae family shares the origins of the type species: the moist mountain woodlands of western China, mainly from Sichuan, between 1,800 and 3,000 meters in altitude. The cultivar was introduced to the West following botanical expeditions conducted in this region in the 1980s and 1990s.

It forms small, supple clumps 20 to 30 cm in height, with finely cut foliage, glaucous green with bluish reflections, sometimes tinged with bronze at the base. The habit is airy and light, characteristic of the group.

The flowers of 'China Blue' are distinguished by a particularly clear and luminous sky blue hue, slightly turquoise, which differentiates it from other selections of the group like 'Blue Panda' with more intense tones. The generous, arched clusters succeed one another above the foliage with beautiful continuity.

In its natural habitat, the flowering of the type species extends from April to June. In cultivation, 'China Blue' blooms from March to May, with a possible resurgence in autumn in regions with cool, moist summers.

It requires fresh, humus-rich, well-drained soil, in shade or partial shade, without prolonged summer drought. Summer dormancy is normal. It is perfectly suited for shaded rock gardens, woodland borders, and pot compositions placed in the shade.
